Pepper, Flemington

Enjoy tasty food accompanied by a book and some rich history at Pepper cafe in Flemington.

Pepper is a local hot spot which has been present in the community for over 12 years and is located in a building built in the early 1900’s which used to be called Girdwood Hygienic Library. Hygienic libraries were popular during the Spanish Influenza where each book was sanitised upon return (this all sounds quite familiar, hey?) Today, the old Art Deco charm of the building is still intact with a cosy, rustic atmosphere of exposed brick walls and wooden furnishings making for a lovely spot to meet with friends or to enjoy a hot beverage accompanied by a book.

We were seated in the nook area of the cafe, which was a very intimate space for two in a covered outdoor balcony area. It felt very private and snug, which made for a unique experience as I have never sat in a cafe space like that before. I would highly recommend giving it a go if it’s available when you visit.

Their menu is refined with unique savoury and sweet breakfast options as well as a diverse lunch selection, including fresh light salads as well as hearty burgers and toasties. Their cheesy spinach and artichoke toast was incredibly flavoursome and tasty. Quite a unique toast topping as I have never come across this combo before and it did not disappoint! Diced up artichoke and spinach was generously spread across crusty sourdough bread, very pungent of garlic which was delightful for those who love garlic, I certainly do! Sprinkled with salty feta on top adding a fresh element to the earthy dish and finally adorned with perfectly cooked poached eggs. This dish was a savoury lovers dream, every flavour worked together perfectly and was very hearty and comforting.

Lighter options on the menu included a citrus cured kingfish salad, Asian infused flavours of lemongrass and ginger were very pungent and fresh in this dish. Kingfish ceviche was thinly sliced and tender which was very citrus flavoured and not overly fishy, with a nice balance of sweet and sour flavour with a little bit of spice! The sesame seed prawn crackers sprinkled through the dish added a lovely crunch which was a nice contrast against the veggies and tender king fish creating an exciting yet very healthy meal.

Many gluten free and vegan options are available on the menu such as veg and vegan wraps, tofu scrambles and burgers. Next time I visit I am very keen to try their pear and cinnamon waffles with brandied pear and toffee sauce which sound like a cinnamon spiced dream!

Their drinks menus if packed with numerous options from hot drinks to milkshakes, smoothies to freshly squeezed juices as well as selection of wines and beers. I would highly recommend attending Pepper next time you visit Flemington, as it is a calm and cosy space, with wonderful hospitality, cool rustic interior and very tasty food.
